Mario Kart Wii has managed to last a very long time. I don't think it's the best battle mode in the series, but it was filled with creative new ideas that should totally be revisited in future games. The new battle mechanics work here, I see what the developers were going for. The desert stage is forgettable but it's good too.

It forces players to gradually get closer to each other and put themselves at a greater risk, kind of like Fortnite (sorry.) Chain Chomp Wheel and especially Funky Stadium are really great too, but you can tell they were just made for Coin Runners. In Block Plaza, parts of the floor sink throughout the match. In Delfino Pier, the water rises overtime and forces you to take high ground. The new battle arenas in this game are all very unique and a blast to play on. Maple Treeway is probably my favorite in the entire game, but Koopa Cape is up there too. But many of these stand out as some of the best in the series. It sucks that later Mario Kart games condensed the character unlocking system, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe removing it entirely.Īll Mario Kart games have some great tracks, so it's no surprise that Mario Kart Wii does too. Pretty much every character and kart can be unlocked just by playing through Grand Prix and Time Trials, and every notable achievement is rewarded with something. Some characters are a pain, like Dry Bowser and Mii Outfit B, but even the worst players are certain to unlock most of the game's content just by playing the game naturally. It feels really rewarding to unlock something too. Second of all, the unlocking criteria is specific to each character, but it's not so random that you could never unlock them without a guide or dumb luck, unlike in Super Smash Bros. First of all, if you don't count the Mii, half the roster is available from the start and half is unlockable.

It's a weird thing to talk about but I think it needs to be brought up.

(This was also sadly the last game in the series to include Diddy Kong and Birdo. It's definitely better than Mario Kart 8 in those regards. The only "filler" or "clone" characters are Baby Daisy and Dry Bowser, but I already explained why I support their inclusion. It's basically the same as Double Dash, but Petey Piranha and Paratroopa were replaced with 8 more decently popular characters. It's a literal work of art.ĭouble Dash introduced more new characters, and Mario Kart 8 just has more, but I still think this is the best roster in the series. The more you look at it, the more you realize how perfect it is. They also help make the roster look the roster look crisp and even. While I understand the complaints, I still think a lot of people genuinely like these characters. The main characters people like to complain about here are Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, Dry Bowser, and to an extent Funky Kong. It's got all the staples but also some weird characters which I really like. On Switch, the DLC parts (including the Mercedes DLC) is thrown in as part of the roster.Everything just looks right in this roster. The exception to the random drops is on Wii U, where DLC parts will be available automatically upon purchase. Parts will unlock at random every 30 coins collected on Switch (or per 50 coins collected on Wii U) which increases to 50 coins at the 500 coin milestone (or every 100 coins at the 1,000 coin milestone on Wii U). Kart Parts: On both platforms, all parts - whether bodies, wheels or gliders - will unlock as you collect Coins, which are littered on tracks during races. The Koopa Clown kart is new to the Switch version.
